Well, my Vacuumstate takes 6, count em, 6, 6922...needless to say, I've almost given up on finding old goodies for them, cuz it just gets way too expensive. 12AX7 (also known as ECC83) is a vacuum tube that is a miniature dual triode - 6AV6 with high voltage gain. It was developed around 1946 by RCA engineers in Camden, New Jersey, under developmental number A-4522. It was released for public sale under the 12AX7 identifier on September 15, 1947. The E88CC is a substitute for the 6922. The ECC88 is a substitute for the 6DJ8. The 6922 has a max voltage of 220 volts. The 6DJ8 has a max voltage of 120-130 volts. You can put a 6922 in a 6dj8 circuit but not the other way around.

I became interested in the 6DJ8 for those same reasons, plus its greater linearity, which is now in question. The curves demonstrate that, for the 6DJ8/6922/ECC88/E88CC, mu is constant within 20% from 0.4mA to the end of my chart at 6mA, and the trend continues to flatten to 15mA.

Designed to allow for cleaner headroom than higher gain 12AX7s when pushed into overdrive, it offers distortion with strongly defined lows, a rich mid range and clean, smooth highs. This exhibit is of earlier manufacture than ECC88 as can be seen by the logo. Also the construction is slightly different. The thin glass tube envelope is 20 mm in diameter and, excluding the B9A base pins, is 48 mm tall. References: Datasheet & 1040. Type ECC88 was first introduced in 1958. Their ECC83 is the most famous ECC83 / 12AX7 ever. Still today, the market for ECC83 is huge, with more than 2 million pieces sold yearly, mostly for guitar amplifiers, but also a good part for Hi Fi amplifiers and phono RIAAs made ever since the early 1950’s.

Is it fine to put a 6922 tube into a pre-amp that is using 12ax7 tube, the shape is the same, same amount of pins, so my question is can I? I know each tube has different characteristics, but generally speaking am I bound to run into some problems doing that, or is it a NO-NO altogether? TrANsfer ChArACTerisTiCs pLATe ChArACTerisTiCs A.
